After Ida Lupino appeared in They Drive by Night (1940) opposite stars George Raft, Ann Sheridan, and Humphrey Bogart, many people thought she was a new discovery, but she had been in talkies as a teenager as early as 1931 and had appeared in a number of British and American films.

Her work in High Sierra (1940) with Humphrey Bogart brought her wide attention, and The Hard Way (1943) won her the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress. She and her husband, Collier Young, formed an independent company, and Ida’s first directing assignments included the critically acclaimed Never Fear (1949), Outrage (1950), and The Hitch-Hiker (1953), making her the first woman to direct a film noir. 

She continued to write, product, direct, and star in many films throughout the 1950s-1970s, and also directed more than a hundred American tv series episodes, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents; Thriller; The Twilight Zone; Have Gun – Will Travel; Honey West; The Donna Reed Show; Gilligan's Island; 77 Sunset Strip; The Rifleman; The Virginian; Sam Benedict; The Untouchables; Hong Kong; The Fugitive; and Bewitched.

“No one ever asked me to direct a love story,” she once said, but she overcame the oversight with Westerns, supernatural tales, social-message stories, situation comedies, murder mysteries, and gangster stories that have stood the test of time.
