Gary Graver (1938-2006) had one of the most fascinating careers in the history of cinema. As a cameraman, he worked with respected filmmakers such as Orson Welles, Ron Howard, John Cassavetes, and Steven Spielberg. On the flip side of that, he also made films with legendary “bad” filmmakers Al Adamson, Ed Wood, and lots of lesser-known B-movie directors.

As a director, Graver helmed more than 20 feature films you’ve probably never heard of. Additionally, he directed hundreds of porn films.

“We Must Shoot!”: The Life and Art of Gary Graver shines a long-overdue spotlight on the filmmaker. This volume is essentially two books in one. The first is an oral history of Graver’s life and career written and assembled by Andrew J. Rausch (co-author of Graver’s own Making Movies with Orson Welles). The second is a thorough examination of Graver’s directorial work, both “legit” and pornographic, by film historians Dave Wain and Matty Budrewicz.
