The Buckskin Western TV Log
by Randy Bonneville
The late 1950s and early 1960s saw the proliferation of the TV Western, with series ranging from family dramas like The Rifleman and Bonanza to the lone wolf avenger: Wanted: Dead or Alive and Have Gun, Will Travel. Also, the dedicated lawman: Gunsmoke and the trail drive: Rawhide. The short-lived series Buckskin was one of the earliest Western dramas; it ran from July 3, 1958 until May 25, 1959, producing just 39 episodes.
Set in a boarding house in Buckskin, Montana, where travelers and townsfolk alike experienced drama and adventure, what set this show apart from other Westerns was having the stories told through the eyes of a ten-year-old boy. Intended as a summer replacement, the show proved successful enough to be developed into a series. Through its short run, Buckskin employed many well-known guest stars, including Robert Fuller, Warren Oates, and a pre-Bonanza Pernell Roberts.
In 1965, NBC decided to refresh viewers’ memories of the series by re-running six episodes during that summer. However, this second roundup failed to catch on and Buckskin faded into the television sunset.
