Now, finally, through diligent research, the full story is told in Guy Williams: The Man Behind the Mask by Antoinette Girgenti Lane ($29.95, BearManor Media softcover). Despite the cliched title, this really is a superlative biography on the popular star of Zorro and Lost in Space.
Author Lane traces his life from his childhood to his modeling days in New York to his early start at MGM, through his reign as Zorro, in foreign movies, Lost in Space, and his eventual retreat to Argentina.

Guy was a gorgeous man, with real presence as an actor, but movie stardom always eluded him. However, after reading this, I can’t honestly say that I like Guy Williams the man, but I admire the author for rising above hero worship, which she could have easily slipped into, considering what a babe Guy was, and painting an, at times, unflattering picture of her subject.

“One of my objectives in writing this book,” the author writes, “was to make the reader feel he had met him too." Guy had some predictable traits, but he was also a walking paradox: masculine yet sensitive, firm yet gentle, conservative yet nonconforming, macho yet intellectual, simple yet complicated. For a refresher, Blanc was the voice of most of the Warner Brothers cartoon characters including Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Sylvester and Tweety bird, Yosemite Sam and all the other favorites you probably remember from your childhood. Beyond the Warner Brothers canon, Blanc occasionally did the Woody Woodpecker laugh, and voiced Barney Rubble and Dino for The Flintstones. Add in countless characters for radio and television, including a lot of work with his friend Jack Benny, and it’s easy to understand how a serious cataloguing of his legacy would end up in a hefty sized book.

"Naturally, the book is chock-full of behind-the-scenes anecdotes revealing how Blanc came up with all those voices. For example, Blanc didn’t like carrots so he kept a bucket handy whenever he had to do Bugs Bunny chopping on carrots. Apparently, no other vegetable could duplicate the sound so Blanc would do his chomping and then spit out the remains in the bucket. In the ‘60s, Blanc was surprised to find his characters singing Beatles and Rolling Stones songs as in Yosemite Sam doing “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”

"We get a considerable amount of insight into Blanc’s personal life, especially as one principal source for the book was his son, Noel. I doubt few readers can read the account of Blanc’s recovery from a near fatal car crash and not be affected by just how resilient Blanc was in getting back to work while still being laid up. Released to theatres in December 1983, CHRISTINE received a tepid response from critics and audiences, but has gained its fans over the years, and they'll definitely get a kick out of this fascinating 320-page oral history of the production, courtesy of the actors and artists behind the camera. Like his previous book on the making of CUJO, author Lee Gambin breaks down the film, scene by scene, dissecting its plot, themes and subtext, followed by lengthy insights from those involved with the production. Interviewees including Carpenter, stars Keith Gordon and Alexandra Paul, supporting bullies William Ostrander, Malcolm Danare, and Steven Tash, screenwriter Bill Phillips, as well as the film's cinematographer, editor, SFX supervisor, and more - recalling CHRISTINE's pre-production, the casting process, scenes that didn't make the final cut, the importance of the film's music, creating the various autos used throughout the film, plus everyone's excitement about working with Carpenter, as well as character actor legends like Robert Prosky, Harry Dean Stanton, and Roberts Blossom. Disney's crime-comedy THE NORTH AVENUE IRREGULARS. The Tanya Roberts erotic-thriller INNER SANCTUM. William Wyler's 1935 melodrama THE GOOD FAIRY. Yes, it's certainly an odd assortment, but that's precisely what makes this 166-page book so entertaining, as editor Ben Ohmart and his expert writers delve into the creation of some of their favorite (but unjustly overlooked) motion pictures. Valerie Yaros details the troubled production of GOOD FAIRY, with Hollywood's new ridiculously-puritanical Production Code forcing scriptwriter Preston Sturges to cut any "objectionable" material. Nat Segaloff chronicles the Jerry Belson scripted black-comedy-turned-Burt-Reynolds-vehicle THE END; Mike Malloy talks to director Jonathan Mostow and Jake Noseworthy about the road-thriller BREAKDOWN; Matt Sanborn tackles 1988's THE BLOB, speaking to Kevin Dillon, Jeffrey DeMunn and director Chuck Russell; plus scriptwriter Mark Thomas McGee takes us on a behind-the-scenes journey into his 1991 direct-to-video hit INNER SANCTUM. Meanwhile, Mike White provides three terrific chapters: 1978's NORTH AVENUE IRREGULARS, with recollections from Edward Herrmann and director Bruce Bilson; Jim Wynorski provides amusing details about 976-EVIL II; plus screenwriter Ken Finkleman recalls being abruptly tossed into the director's chair of the chaotic AIRPLANE II: THE SEQUEL, along with a Robert Hays Q&A and lengthy list of deleted scenes.
