Now, finally, through diligent research, the full story is told in Guy Williams: The Man Behind the Mask by Antoinette Girgenti Lane ($29.95, BearManor Media softcover). Despite the cliched title, this really is a superlative biography on the popular star of Zorro and Lost in Space.
Author Lane traces his life from his childhood to his modeling days in New York to his early start at MGM, through his reign as Zorro, in foreign movies, Lost in Space, and his eventual retreat to Argentina.

Guy was a gorgeous man, with real presence as an actor, but movie stardom always eluded him. However, after reading this, I can’t honestly say that I like Guy Williams the man, but I admire the author for rising above hero worship, which she could have easily slipped into, considering what a babe Guy was, and painting an, at times, unflattering picture of her subject.

“One of my objectives in writing this book,” the author writes, “was to make the reader feel he had met him too." Guy had some predictable traits, but he was also a walking paradox: masculine yet sensitive, firm yet gentle, conservative yet nonconforming, macho yet intellectual, simple yet complicated. In the 1940s, she began doing voiceovers for animated cartoons. In the next decade, she worked at various cartoon studios, particularly Walt Disney, MGM, and Warner Brothers. Her most famous role at Warner Brothers was as Tweety's human owner Granny in the studio's "Tweety and Sylvester" cartoons. Foray made one major live-action film appearance as a high priestess in the 1953 film Sabaka.

In the late 1940s, Capitol Records hired her to voice children's records. For a refresher, Blanc was the voice of most of the Warner Brothers cartoon characters including Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Sylvester and Tweety bird, Yosemite Sam and all the other favorites you probably remember from your childhood. Beyond the Warner Brothers canon, Blanc occasionally did the Woody Woodpecker laugh, and voiced Barney Rubble and Dino for The Flintstones. Add in countless characters for radio and television, including a lot of work with his friend Jack Benny, and it’s easy to understand how a serious cataloguing of his legacy would end up in a hefty sized book.

"Naturally, the book is chock-full of behind-the-scenes anecdotes revealing how Blanc came up with all those voices. For example, Blanc didn’t like carrots so he kept a bucket handy whenever he had to do Bugs Bunny chopping on carrots. Apparently, no other vegetable could duplicate the sound so Blanc would do his chomping and then spit out the remains in the bucket. The classic movies, TV, and other art forms are thankfully still here to remind us how good it was, and the award-winning Dickinson was there to see a lot of it as a young actress starting out in the early 1950's. Her best movie work in some of the best movies of their genres- think of the great western Rio Bravo, which made her a star in 1959, the Rat Pack's Ocean's 11 which also made her hip and cool in 1960, the solid remake, The Killers (1964), and one of our favourites, 1967's Point Blank, a film about a lot of nasty people she did with Lee Marvin, where she showed great range. Then there's a later entry, a great third act, the erotic crime thriller, Dressed to Kill in 1980. There was also a long list of great television work, most notably, her four years starring as Sergeant 'Pepper' Anderson in the 1970's classic, Police Woman. She also travelled in circles that included Sinatra, JFK, Dean Martin and a marriage to legendary songwriter, Burt Bachrach. Which leads us to the first in our series of "great summer reads", Angie: The Life and Films of Angie Dickinson by film historian, James Stratton. It is the first (and we say long overdue) book-length study of her career. It is also a real page-turner, taking you from her early years growing up far from Hollywood, through a career which would span over six decades and contain an impressive and diverse body of work. Here is the entire story of Teletubbies. Denise Noe shows the reader the seeds that sprouted in the minds of Andrew Davenport, whose fascination with the space program led him to imagine overgrown space babies, and Anne Woods, whose response to watching Power Rangers kicking each other was to create characters who would hug instead of fight. Noe shows us how the dilemma of bringing the real world into the fantasized Teletubby world led to a solution of genuinely inspired creativity. Noe tells how performers took tiny bits of themselves into these wonderfully wacky characters as well as how cast and crew coped with difficulties imposed by oversized, bulky costumes and the occasional bout of turbulent weather. She takes us behind the scenes with a cast that included not only professional actors and actresses but “everyday” people who appeared on the famous “tummy screen films” in documentary-style episodes about their lives.

Not all was sweetness and light in the making of this TV show. Noe shows the pain suffered when an actor playing a Teletubby found himself replaced. She also discusses the controversies that swirled around Teletubbies, going into depth about both the accusation that the show was a “dumbing down” of children’s TV and the idea that the purple Teletubby, Tinky Winky, represented a gay man. The movie was finished in 1993 and scheduled for a 1994 release. Before the premiere, Marvel bought the film and the negative was destroyed. The Fantastic Four would never be seen. However, a single copy made during a routine transfer leaked out and found its way to comic conventions and eventually to the Internet. Marvel refuses to recognize its existence. Was the film bought up and cancelled to preserve the integrity of later Fantastic Four films? Was Marvel unable to bear being cut out of the making of one of its biggest properties? Was the movie just a desperate move on Eichinger’s part to extend his option and give him leverage with Marvel? And what was Corman’s part in all of this? Was he a partner in some larger conspiracy, was he fooled along with the cast and crew into thinking this would be released, or did he have his own hidden agenda? Who knew what when? Drawing from extensive interviews with cast, crew, and producers, and featuring over two dozen exclusive photographs, the true story behind the first Fantastic Four movie ever and one of the greatest Hollywood mysteries is finally revealed a quarter of a century later. Kelly's mother Nan was an ambitious model who pushed all but one of her four children into show biz careers. His older sister was Nancy Kelly, who began acting as a child and matured into an acclaimed leading lady. Jack Kelly himself performed as a youngster in films, in radio, and on stage. Following a grown-up stint in the military, he moseyed back into films and then into television.

After headlining on Maverick for five years, Kelly drifted into perennial TV guest stardom, pausing along the way to appear in movies and in summer stock. He even emceed a game show. Kelly also made successful forays into business and politics. He served as city councilman and mayor in Huntington Beach, California--while still accepting occasional acting roles--before his tragic death at age 65 in 1992.

A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story is a brisk read, but it doesn't skimp on detail or on insight into Kelly's life. In addition to thoroughly researching her subject, Ms. Alexander obtained invaluable input from Kelly's family members (including both of his wives and his beloved daughter) along with memories from his fellow thespians such as Sir Roger Moore and James Drury, star of The Virginian.

The author unmasks the complicated human being inside the ebullient entertainer and pulls no punches. For example, many fans have wondered why Jack Kelly's success on Maverick didn't translate into enduring major stardom. Ms. Alexander traces part of the answer to Kelly's predilection to alcohol. She also reveals that the actor's formative family ties kept him bound far into adulthood. He was deeply affected by upheavals in his personal and professional lives and by events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Yet, Kelly remained in denial about his own life-threatening health condition until it was too late.

However, A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story is by no means a "downer". The reader also meets the Jack Kelly who was a loving father, a lively practical joker, an accomplished golfer, an expert cook, a talented writer, a dedicated politician, and a man who genuinely loved--and was loved by--some of the most glamorous gals in Hollywood.

And, once and for all, Linda Alexander busts the myth that Jack Kelly was just the "other guy" on Maverick. Ms. Alexander uncovers the behind-the-scenes intrigue and restores Kelly to his proper place in the Maverick equation.

A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story is generously illustrated with rare black and white photos from all phases of Kelly's life and career.
