Paul Reed started working in Vaudeville as a chewing gum peddler before progressing to performing. He later worked as a singer on WOR Radio in New York in the 1930s, and followed that with appearances in many Broadway musicals Guys & Dolls, The Music Man, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and Promises, Promises.
In 1956, a new generation of TV viewers saw him nearly every week as a foil for Sid Caesar in Caesar's Hour. In 1958, he played Second Banana to Phil Silvers on Sergeant Bilko, and then achieved an ignominious recognition on Car 54, Where Are You? as the beleaguered Captain.
Reed continued to work on Broadway and in television situation comedies through the 1960s, appearing in various episodes of Bewitched, The Donna Reed Show, Beverly Hillbillies, I Dream of Jeannie, and The Munsters.
