From February 18, 1949 to September 30, 1962, Old Time Radio listeners enjoyed Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, a drama featuring a fictional character known as either a “private investigator” or “the man with the action-packed expense account—America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator." With either slant, he was always a strong shrewd detective, who tossed silver dollar tips as easily as he teased with a wisecrack.
Voice actors during the twelve-year run included Dick Powel, Charles Russell, Edmund O’Brien, John Lund, Gerald Mohr, Bob Bailey, Bob Readick, and Mandel Kramer. In addition to a talented stock company, celebrity appearances included Jay Novello, Hans Conried, Frank Nelson, Leon Belasco, William Conrad, Edgar Barrier, Gloria Blondell, and Billy Halop.
With a razor-sharp scrutiny that would have made Johnny Dollar proud, author John C. Abbott investigates each episode using material drawn from existing transcribed episodes, as well as the KNX Los Angeles CBS affiliate radio station archives that are now in the KNX collection of the Thousand Oaks, California library.
His detailed case analyses catalog each episode’s story, location, cast, expenses, writers, and directors, and he cross-references to programs that used the same script but with a different name and cast. Also includes a listing of cases by insurance company and the expenses for each of the six Johnny Dollars updated to twenty-first century dollars.
Volumes 1-3 cover all known episodes.
