Moviegoing audiences loved actress Susan Hayward in her five Best Actress Academy Award-nominated performances: as an alcoholic in Smash-Up, the Story of a Woman (1947), in My Foolish Heart (1949), as legendary singer Jane Froman in With a Song in My Heart (1952), as Lillian Roth in I'll Cry Tomorrow (1955), and her winning role as Barbara Graham in I Want to Live! (1958).
Fade in on author Gene Arceri and his fascination with Susan, which began as a teenage usher at the Roosevelt Theatre on Flushing, Long Island. New York and began to shape into a book when he began hosting a talk show over at PBS radio, in San Francisco. His extensive research took him from Brooklyn to Atlanta, with stops in-between to interview friends, associates, and Susan’s brother, Walter.
Gene is the author of biographies on Elizabeth Taylor and Betty Hutton, and he was a columnist for ten years for Jo Lee International Magazine.
